Anthology Mag is Gettin' Festive!

I’m so excited about this Holiday Season. I feel like Christmas comes earlier and earlier as the years go by and believe it or not…I heard the radio playing Christmas Music immediately after Halloween. This is NOT me complaining. EEE. This year I hope to get some holiday DIYs done, so wish me luck!

These just happen to be some of my favorite spreads from Anthology Magazine Holiday Gift Guide Edition. Read Here.

* All I have to say is, like whoa!

1. A perfect blog post about allowing yourself to say no and the ability to set boundaries.

2. Kikkerland has become one of my favorite spots to scope out cute (why would I need this) type of objects.

3. They always say designers are never creating original work, but instead stealing them and reworking them. Here’s a website just for that called, Ideas to Steal.

4. For all your paper lovers out there….go nutso at ParcelPost

5. This little sweetie pie has been added to my wish list. How cute is she? (yes…she’s a she)

6. This was my favorite blog this week (Schorle Madchen). Her images tell such a great story.

7. Lots of eye candy in this shop. Shop Darkroom–>

8. And this was my favorite tumblr site this week (Cubicle Refugee)!

9. I knew I loved Lisa Congdon, but I had no idea I loved her studio space so much. It’s completely magical.

Happy Weekend!

Rose & Crown // Built With Love

Today is Thanksgiving in the US and although the blog I’m about to share with you celebrated their Thanksgiving a few weeks back (Canadian Thanksgiving), the photos are full of love and perfect for today. Rose & Crown captures real life, real moments, and the beauty of simple things. I like to say Rose & Crown is built with Love.

Please stop by the blog and watch your heart slowly melt. The images in today’s post really brought the spirit of the season to life. Love them all 🙂 These photos have also reminded me to take lots of photos this Holiday season. Things have been pretty crazy around here lately and I miss my camera.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Design plagiarism, like woah!

I’ve been doing my normal web hopping and came across a blog post by Studio Tundra. Their blog strives to bring creative inspiration to daily life. Isn’t that what we are trying to do in blog land?? Anyway, they were drawn to a project by two men who came up with a concept with milk in a can and graphically, their packaging was amazing and truly unique….or so we thought. Later, Studio Tundra was contacted by artist/designer who claimed the work you had fallen in love with was a direct copy of the work she had done and was asking the studio to remove this act of plagiarism. You can read more about what happened here, but the main point is that design and plagiarism is a tricky subject.

In the design world, it isn’t uncommon to take some pre-existing concept/design/pattern, etc and be inspired to create something like it that is your own. Unfortunately, hardly any new design ideas are 100% original. However,  a good designer is able to take bits and pieces away from what they find inspiring and use aspects of that inspiration while creating an entirely new look, something they can confidently call their own piece of work.

The only reason I bring this issue to my blog is because I am a designer and face this issue on a daily basis. I’m constantly evaluating my work to make sure I have not committed design plagiarism. When you come across something that looks a little too familiar and smells fishy, it’s a bloggers job to point it out. Urban Outfitters and the whole jewelry debacle is a perfect example how bloggers have stood up again this mess.

recreate it / 05

I can’t believe we’re already into the FIFTH week of recreate it posts! Time is certainly flying. If you’re new and wanna check out the past month, here are the links: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Now, this week’s post is certainly bright, but that’s the point! Because it’s currently fall and winter is upon us, people sometimes forget about those bright summery colors. I’m not saying you should fill your space with them – but definitely don’t leave them in the dust, that’s for sure! Pops of color, like these, are often EYE catching and will grab a viewer’s attention straight away. So why not give them that POP? Try it out and make sure you check out Cassie’s feature this week over on moxee.

All the way from South Africa!

I was perusing Design Sponge, like I do every day and came across a mushroom print table cloth. I hoped on over to the Esty shop called Skinny Laminx (based out of Cape Town South Africa), and was blown away with all the greatness in stock. The color palettes are right on, the patterns are one of a kind and extremely versatile, and the prices are decent. I also loved seeing the option of buying an entire roll or just a small tea towel. These pieces would make perfect gifts this holiday season. Let’s oooo and ahhhhhh some more shall we?

In Their Home // Varpunen

I keep stumbling upon the best blogs! This weeks In Their Home gives you a sneak peek inside the home of momma and blogger of Pikku Varpunen, from Finland. Suki, the blogger loves to decorate and organize her home. She’s really great at it and has an inspiring home that is making it’s impression all over the internet. Plus, she has a really sweet daughter, Varpu. She’s also the owner of the Big Cartel Shop called Varpunen where she sells graphic sacks.

Thank you Sandi

Sandi from Adalou Vintage blog introduced me to the work of Cristiana Couceiro last week and as soon as I saw it….I remember thinking to myself “no freaking way….this stuff is awesome”. She has a similar design aesthetic to myself and I’ve love to play around with incorporating photography with my graphics. Ahhh. Her colors, simplicity…everything is amazing! Such an inspiration. She’s made it to my list of permanent bookmarked sites. Go check out her portfolio.

Thanks for thinking of me Sandi! Visit Sandi’s blog here.
