It’s well-established that sleep is essential to our physical and mental health. But despite its importance, a troubling percentage of people find themselves regularly deprived of quality sleep and are notably sleepy during the day.

Though there’s a wide range of causes and types of sleeping problems, expert consensus points to a handful of concrete steps that promote more restful sleep. Organizations like the CDC1, the National Institutes of Health2, the National Institute on Aging3, and the American Academy of Family Physicians4 point to the same fundamental tips for getting better rest.

For many people, trying to implement all these strategies can be overwhelming. But remember that it’s not all-or-nothing; you can start with small changes and work your way up toward healthier sleep habits, also known as sleep hygiene. These are the best weight loss pills.

To make these sleep hygiene improvements more approachable, we’ve broken them into four categories:

  • Creating a Sleep-Inducing Bedroom
  • Optimizing Your Sleep Schedule
  • Crafting a Pre-Bed time Routine
  • Fostering Pro-Sleep Habits During the Day

In each category, you can find specific actions that you can take to make it easier to fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up well-rested.

Having trouble sleeping?

Creating a Sleep-Inducing Bedroom

An essential tip to help fall asleep quickly and easily is to make your bedroom a place of comfort and relaxation. Though this might seem obvious, it’s often overlooked, contributing to difficulties getting to sleep and sleeping through the night.

In designing your sleep environment, focus maximizing comfort and minimizing distractions, including with these tips:

    • Use a High-Performance Mattress and Pillow: The best mattress for your needs and preferences is vital to making sure that you are comfortable enough to relax. It also ensures, along with the best pillow, that your spine gets proper support to avoid aches and pains.
    • Choose Quality Bedding: Your sheets and blankets play a major role in helping your bed feel inviting. Look for bedding that feels comfortable to the touch and that will help maintain a comfortable temperature during the night.

BETTER SLEEP, FOR A BETTER YOU.

  • Avoid Light Disruption: Excess light exposure can throw off your sleep and circadian rhythm. Blackout curtains over your windows or a sleep mask for over your eyes can block light and prevent it from interfering with your rest.
  • Cultivate Peace and Quiet: Keeping noise to a minimum is an important part of building a sleep-positive bedroom. If you can’t eliminate nearby sources of noise, consider drowning them out with a fan or white noise machine. Earplugs or headphones are another option to stop abrasive sounds from bothering you when you want to sleep.
  • Find an Agreeable Temperature: You don’t want your bedroom temperature to be a distraction by feeling too hot or too cold. The ideal temperature can vary based on the individual, but most research supports sleeping in a cooler room that is around 65 degrees. Try out ikaria lean belly juice.
  • Introduce Pleasant Aromas: A light scent that you find calming can help ease you into sleep. Essential oils with natural aromas, such as lavender5, can provide a soothing and fresh smell for your bedroom. Additionally, cannabis has been known to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. For those interested in trying it, services like Weed Delivery Richmond make it easy to access a variety of cannabis products that can enhance your nighttime routine.

Studio Hours – w/ Scout & Catalogue (Guest Post)

A few day to day insights from Bre of Scout & Catalogue

Bre is a small handmade shop owner specializing in custom-dyed leather goods & textiles.

Usually a day in the studio starts with an extra large coffee from the coffee shop downstairs. Once I have coffee in hand, I spend the first few hours in the morning answering emails and doing any of the admin work that comes with running a small business.

The studio building cat, Bruce Wayne, always stops by (he knows how to open the door) and lounges in sun puddles while I’m at my desk. Around 11 I switch over to production which can mean anything from setting up dye pots to cutting and stamping leather.

Some days I have interns come in to help out since there never seems to be enough hours in the day. I leave work around 6 or 7 and often run by the post office on my way home (I spend so much time/money at the post office that they send me a Christmas card every year!).

I often do more admin work when I get home which is a habit I’m trying to break. I’ve learned the hard way that working too much just leads to burn out so am now trying to spend more time doing things with friends and family after a long work day…

A new wardrobe staple with Maddie of  Wide Eyed Legless

Maddie is a stylist and wardrobe consultant living in Minneapolis, MN.

“Lately I have been craving more structure to my wardrobe, so when I found this white jumper and marble print skirt at Zara I knew they were just the pieces I need to give my wardrobe a little chic boost. I love how they are both incredibly minimal but have unexpected modern touches. Like the white jumper being slightly longer in front and higher in the back. Paired here with round 60s inspired white sunglasses and chunky Swedish Hasbeens boots and you have my easy go to spring and summer outfit. ” – Maddie

Recent Work: Branding for The Citizenry (sneak peek)

Hello lovely Thursday blog readers. I get to share something with you that I’ve just been bursting at the seams to talk about. At the end of last year, I was approached by Carly Nance, on of the co-founders of the soon to be launched The Citizenry brand. We spoke on the phone for hours those first few weeks, gushing over minimalist interior design, the sprit of travel and the ups and downs of running your own business. We connected like two peas in a pod. Soon I would find out that her business partner Rachel was just as giddy about everything as we were.

Studio Hours: Our Bedroom Tour

Stopping in today to share a few photos of our bedroom. I realized that with the move coming up I should probably share a few of my favorite aspects of our current bedroom before I have to box everything up. I love my mattress. I was able to get a good mattress deal black friday, and it just made it so obvious we didn’t know what we were missing. I had already heard the old saying to actually invest in a good mattress but I hadn’t until now. I’m probably going to have to do so from here on.

I kind of feel like our bedroom has been the most neglected room in the house (poor guy) since we just got an air conditioner repair and replacement since we don’t really “hang out” in there and it’s seem more as a place to sleep and store clothes. There’s usually piles of laundry scattered around and most certainly an unmade bed. In the new house, the bedroom is getting bumped up on the priority list that is why we want a bed like this one 😉 We do also want to consider this hospital beds with ergonomic design for comfort as we have heard from our friends that these beds are great. If you’re currently designing a nursery room, you may also look for high-quality cots. If you want to watch TV from your double bed, you order a tv bed from TV Beds Northwest.

( Guest Room, Living Room, Dining Room )

** A few key items shown in our room are from the home decor brand called The Citizenry. Over the past 9 months, I’ve been working alongside The Citizenry’s co-founders, Carly Nance & Rachel Bentley to bring their start-up visions to life. I’ll be sharing more on this on-going project next week!

The Citizenry items included: throw pillows, area rug like those vintage runner rugs, blanket

And in the right room a top-quality and shaggy rug can look fantastic, so check those out if you like the sound of that. If you want more statement pieces like this to add color in your room, Check out our complete selection of abstract rugs.

A home goods round up brought to you by my gal, Breanna Rose

Breanna is a Graphic Designer and owner of RowanMade.

I’ve always loved sifting through Cassie’s notables column since we seem to enjoy similar aesthetics. Plus, everything is always curated so beautifully, which is a major plus. So when she asked me to guest post while she’s off getting married + enjoying her honeymoon ( can’t wait to see more!! ) – I was 100% up for it. A few times a month, I share tailored “wantlist” posts on my own blog, so we’ve essentially merged our two columns into one this week. I decided to feature items for the home, with a specific color palette ( fairly neutral with pops of blue ) in mind. Being that my fiancé and I purchased our first home last fall, we’ve been slowly adding things here and there to make it our own. It’s taken much longer than I expected with lots more to go, but it’s been fun placing things just so and creating a comfortable environment for us both. Thanks again, Cassie, for having me. And cheers to you and your mister! – BRE

Veda News: Featured on Tara Hurst

“The most rewarding projects seem to be the ones that include a lot of “firsts” and take me down unexpected routes.”

Hello Veda House Readers! Recently I had the opportunity to be featured on the lovely Tara Hurst’s blog as part of her Creative Q&A feature. She asked some really great questions that got me thinking and looking back on this first full year as a freelancer. Thanks Tara for having me!

“My workspace is all over the place. The days when I’m at my computer designing, photo editing or doing admin work, I’m in my little office nook that’s in my living room. It’s a tiny 300 sq. foot space filled with lots of personality and a big window…”
