Brand Design Photography & Styling Clarity Consulting

starting today…

I’m taking a mini- break.  A break to sit back and think, assess, reassess, and to get inspired again. When I got back from my trip to Portland this summer I had over a month’s worth of content I wanted to share with you guys. Of course I interspersed my normal “Love This” posts and “Friday Finds & Favorites”, but the majority of my sharing was from our trip. Blogging was almost effortless for an entire month. All I had to do was edit some photos of pretty things and then tell you a little bit about them. Easy peezy and fun.

I’ve now exhausted all Portland content (I bet some of you are saying, thank goodness…haha) and now I am kind of at a loss. I know I have things to blog about because I’m thinking about stuff all the time. The thing I’m lacking is time to compile the posts in a meaningful way and to share those posts with you.

Starting today I am taking a one week blogging break to kind of catch up on my to do list. I’m going to take this time to get inspired again and come back with some great content to share. September is going to be exciting. I have almost every weekend booked with family and friends weekend visits, lots of shop updates, new design opportunities, and a pile of DIYs to share. This all means there will be lots of fun stuff to be blogging about.

I’ve never taken more than a weekend break and the thought of a whole week is super scary. As a new blogger I’m scared I’m going to lose all you sweet souled readers I have coming back on a daily basis and that’s terrifying. I hope everyone understands everyone needs a break once and while and because this blog is ultimately for ME, I need to pay it a little respect and not post crap.

Some things to look at while I’m away. I’m a Pinning queen on Pinterestand will be updating my boards with some pretty pretties. I’m also on Twitter if you’d like to chat 🙂

Last note. I’ve been sponsoring some other amazing bloggers this month. Go check them out! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

whimsy & spice: brooklyn confectioners

One of my favorite daily blog reads is called Sweet Fine Day and is written by a creative pair, Jenna and Mark. Jenna is a designer and Mark is a pastry chef, and both are parenting the cutest two young gals.

Whimsy& Spice was founded by the husband and wife pair back in 2008. The combination of culinary skills and graphic design produce a brand that is not only gorgeous to look at, but tasty too!

Stop by their online shop to place an order or stop by their blog to catch up on a good read!

recent find: stencil kit

Last Friday I took my lunch break to peruse a local antique mall for an hour. I hadn’t been to this particular antique mall for a little over a month, so it was a nice surprise to see all the booths had had a little face lift makeover. It was definitely refreshing and I walked away with some great pieces.

This box of vintage brass interlocking stencils was a great find. I’m attracted to anything that uses stamping or typography, so I knew I’d be taking it home with me. Although the box has seen better days, the stencils appear to be barely used! I was also pleased to find out it was a complete set.

Look for this item in my Etsy shop soon. The set would be perfect for arts and crafts, embossing, scrapbooks, handmade card making, etc.

*note: I appreciate everyone that is hanging in there with me during this blog identity crisis. I’m still working through why I feel my blog design still isn’t “there” yet and would love suggestions if you have any to share.

inside our loft building

The boy and I have come to really love our loft space. It seems to be the perfect size, perfect style/details, and most of all perfect location in St.Louis. The building is a converted shoe factory and is filled with industrial touches like massive wood been, wood ceilings, wall to wall windows, and brick ever where. Enjoy a little insiders peek into our building.

Inside the loft tour will happen some time soon. The place always seems to be in disarray when I get my heart set on taking photos. One of these days….

Let's discuss: taking photos in vintage shops

* click images to take you to source images

WHAT THE HUBUB IS THE BIG DEAL. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told by the creepy guy behind the counter that I need to put my camera away and not to take pictures inside the shop. WHAAA???

This is the oddest thing to me. Vintage is so one of a kind that if I’m coming in to sneak up on his inventory, I’m still going to have to do the leg work to track down all the items. I’ve been in so many shops where the shop owners almost follow you around the story stalking your every movement. It’s rude, it’s unwelcoming, and it’s definitely not vintage spirit (whatever that means).

I wanted to see if any of you were having this same problem or is it just me. I know I’m completely intimidating and have the intentions of stealing every item they have in stock, but COME ON!!

Ok….I’m done with my little hissy fit…..discuss amongst yourselves…..

A little redesign

So I’ve been jumping from design to design over the past month searching for something that represents by design style as a designer as well as how I want my blog content displayed. I feel like I’m finally heading into the right direction and would love to hear your thoughts.

This new design pluses up the content area with a major focus on photography. I feel the images can speak for themselves, so I’m trying to get rid of the extra fluff.

I’m in the process of converting some of my old posts to the new image format, but it will take some time for everything to look consistent. Please hang in there and let me know if something isn’t working.

DIY: glass bottle photo display

From left to right —-> bottle 1  //   bottle 2  //   bottle 3

I’ll have to admit that I haven’t tried this yet, and I blame my obsession with amber glass bottles. Because I snatch up every brown glass bottle/jar I can find at a reasonable price, I’ve had blinders on to the pretty clear bottles. Those blinders are now off and I’m on the hunt for some clear bottles. The fun thing about this is that you can always add to the collection, so their is no pressure to “finish” the project. My kind of project!!!!

This DIY project was first published in Yankee Magazine and has now been floating around the internet teasing me with it’s simplicity and beauty. (top image is from DIY) Hop on over to Yankee Magazine’s site for a full list of supplies and directions. You don’t really need directions if you think about it. Step one, collect bottles. Step 2, put photos in those bottles. Donzo. I also took the liberty to do some shopping for you. You’re welcome 😉  Don’t forget to check out the Etsy sellers highlighted in this post!

I’m really loving slow motion videos these days. Makes you stop and look at every detail.

1. Thanks to Veronika I’m inspired to try making my own terrarium. Looks fun and relatively simple.

2. I’m thinking this backpack might need to be mine. A little pricey, so I’m weighing my options.

3. Bookhou at Home Etsy shop has a whole lot of beautiful in it. Check out the bags and textiles. So pretty!

4. One of my favorite Etsy shops so far is AM Radio. Love everything and I think the shop is perfectly curated.

5. I want to buy everything in this shop for my boy. Make him one dapper gent.

6. Get your daily packaging design inspiration on. Great resource!

7. For those of you who are looking for a professional looking website, but done want to write the code. Use Adobe Muse.

8. Sign up for the award-winning Wright Design catalogue. A little pricey for a year’s subscription, but I think it’d be worth the mula.

9. Some beautiful logo designsby London based art director, Andreas Neophytou.

10. More design work to drool over. Graphic design portfolio by Recker House.

Pip & Estella

Another lucky find of mine was Pip & Estella, a beautifully curated online vintage shop with products at extremely reasonable prices!

“My inspiration for the boutique’s original concept comes from one of my favorite novels — the old and worn, yet intriguing and magnetic aesthetic of the mansion, Satis House, as described in the Charles Dickens piece, Great Expectations.  In my mind, sunlight filtered images of Satis were lovely, albeit aging and let’s not forget, inspiring.”  – Sana, Founder

Stop by her shop and check out her collection. Also please check out her latest project, FD+RD (Father/Daughter reDesign). Love it!

just the three of us

We tend to love to just wander. That’s what we do. He’s holds the pup’s leash to keep him from darting to the couple playing frisbee across the park and I stop to take pictures at anything that catches my eye. Yesterday was perfect wandering weather, sunny and 80. Did I mention how much I love our quant little neighborhood?
