Ask Me Anything

Hi There lovely readers. As time goes by, I’ve been wanting to compile all your questions into one post and share a few answers. I’ve started a good list of questions that have already come through my inbox and will be answering them soon. Some of the more business related questions might make their way into a full blog post so I can ramble a little bit more.. If there is anything you’ve ever wanted to ask me or inquire about, leave a comment for me. I don’t typically touch on a lot of personal aspects of my life, but everything is fair game as long as you play nice 😉

A few questions that have already come in….How did you get your start? Did you go to school for design? What camera do you use and how do you edit your photos? What graphic design services do you offer? How do you go about setting your daily schedule? How do you set a minimum hour working agreement with your retainer clients? How do you make freelancing work from a money/income standpoint?

++

Look forward to hearing your questions and providing some answers.

What do you want to know?

  1. I’d love to know how you go about gaining clients you’d like to work with (other than via word of mouth etc) – or if you don’t have to do this – how you’d recommend finding more work when freelancing (ie. finding clients, recruitment, sites etc). Thanks! x

  2. This question is for fun! If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

    This question is for real! At which point in your life did you realize that this was the career you wanted to pursue? And how did you know that this is what you wanted to be pursuing?

  3. This is awesome! I am a first year graphic design student and I wonder if you give me some advice? For one, I am having a hard time getting good grades and my designs seem very amateurish. I wonder, is this normal? I just worry that while I worked really hard to get my portfolio ready for admissions, I may not be as creative as I wish I was (?). Thank you Cassie!

  4. I remember reading in an interview you did once about how when you started out freelancing, you were doing projects for niches that you didn’t want to be doing, like girly blog designs, etc. How did you transition to the (fantastic) style that you have now and attract the customer you do want when your portfolio didn’t represent that? Did you just do a lot of concept projects? I’d love to hear about how to transition your client base when your portfolio doesn’t represent the style you want to work on. Thanks so much!

  5. I love Laura’s question and something I’m also very interested in. I’ve been doing corporate design for nearly ten years and I would like to do some freelance work on the side, but I want to make sure that I’m attracting the kind of work that I want to do.

  6. As a creative, did you ever face a moment of deciding between a safer, more financially stable path and an option that would give you more creative freedom but also be more risky? I feel like creatives end up facing that “moment” multiple times in their lives…if so, how did you handle it? Thanks!
