Jeremy Mason: Wax & Oil

Hey there friendly friends! I’ve been feeling a little slacking in the fine art department here on the blog so today’s post is all about that. I was recently introduced to the work of Jeremy Mason (Financial Planner by day, artist by night) and was instantly intrigued. The pieces are abstract (which I love) and are constructed with some unique materials; oil, wax, & wood. Did I mention the awesome use of color? After talking a little with Jeremy through email, this is what he had to say about his work.

I love modern art with an antique sensibility.  I am inspired by art and design that is as comfortable as it is challenging.  As such, I attempt to use the most traditional materials I can in my work.

My latest series was made using encaustic wax, a medium that dates back to the Egyptian times and was revived by modern artist Jasper Johns.  For the base of each painting I brushed wood panels with a rust mixture historically used for staining gun stocks.  The wax is used to seal the wood grain and can be clear for building layers or pigmented to add color.  ”  –Jeremy

I promise you’ll fall in love! They have rich designs with quirky illustrations. A definitely must have if you love sending notes to your friends and family.

Lesson Learned: Being Uncomfortable

Hey team! Hope all is well in your worlds 🙂 I’m stopping by today to talk about “being uncomfortable”. If you’re anything like me, you’re happiest in your perfectly constructed bubble of goodness. For me, just the thought of doing something NEW tends to rattle me a big. Most times I’m good to go once I talk myself down, but OMG do I have something uncomfortable happening next week.

I’m not a fan of airplanes, or traveling alone, or being away from home…alone…for very long. That’s exactly what I’m doing next week. I’m hoping on a jet plane and flying off to the west coast  to meet up with some blogger/freelance pals for a little girls weekend/retreat. Fun right? I’m excited…don’t get me wrong, but OMG am I uncomfortable. I don’t do this, but I took a step in a new direction and bought that plane ticket months ago. I can do this.

Do any of you know what I’m talking about. That excited, but completely hesitant feeling? The feeling that you’re acting like a childish fool? You know…that feeling? Please tell me I’m not alone.

A summer collaboration: The Best of STL

This summer I had the pleasure of working with Jennifer of I ART U on a little photography collaboration where we showcases all the lovely things about our cities. We’ve still got one more week to go (next monday) but I thought I’d share some of my favorites that I’ve shared on her blog. I really do love St. Louis. Photos above are from Cherokee Street and the Soulard Farmers Market. Come back on Monday for our last post of the summer.

Lesson Learned: Always be prepared

So last week I was out and about around town and decided to stop in a newly opened boutique shop. I loved it. The aesthetic, the business model…everything about it was unique. A friend and I got to talking to the shop owner about how she got started and specifically how she’s currently running things. My friend and I mentioned a business idea we’ve been throwing around and then it happened…the shop owner asked for a business card. I was also making plans in mind for marketing or having review on sites.

AHHH, I didn’t have one with me and instantly felt inferior and less professional. I felt like if I would have had a card with me, the business plan we were blabbering about would have been more convincing. That’s the moment that I decided I really needed to make more business cards…and pronto. I’ve known the importance of having a business card since my college days, but I’ve been slacking.

Have you guys ever been caught in a situation where you wish you would have had a business card or some kind of leave behind? I’d love to hear your “I could kick myself in the face” moments.

Never Love A Wild Thing: Downloadable Wallpapers

Something fun for today. I was in need of a new wallpaper for my iPad, so I figured I’d create my own. The quote featured in the wallpaper is from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I really love it. I read into it literally and figuratively, so lots of ways of looking at it. Full quote below & original image.

“Never love a wild thing…. He was always lugging home wild things. A hawk with a hurt wing. One time it was a full-grown bobcat with a broken leg. But you can’t give your heart to a wild thing: the more you do, the stronger they get. Until they’re strong enough to run into the woods. Or fly into a tree. Then a taller tree. Then the sky. That’s how you’ll end up…. If you let yourself love a wild thing. You’ll end up looking at the sky.”

the neighborhood that stole my heart

It’s been 3 years of walking the streets lined with row homes. From the day we moved in, the charm of our neighborhood has me feeling really spoiled. How’d I find this little square in a big city? I don’t know how many pictures I have of the brightly colored row homes, but I keep snapping. I hope all the photos will help moving away a little easier (if that time ever comes).

favorite pickin' spot: Lemp Mansion

I’ve got a favorite (relatively unknown) picking’ spot here in St. Louis, the Historic Lemp Mansion. I’ve been at the warehouse the past 3 Saturdays, collecting a little bit of this and a little bit of that. The architecture of the warehouse itself is just gorgeous and I love all the industrial details. I thought it necessary to take a few pictures to share.
