A Weekend Out & About, part 1

Here in St. Louis we’re lucky to have a lot of fun things to do once the weather turns to spring/summer. The city comes to life and everyone comes together for their favorite summer activities (farmer’s markets, outdoor music events, wine tasting, etc).

The photos in this post are a mix from my camera and my iPhone. I’ve been using the new VSCO film app recently and really enjoying the way I can turn my iPhone photos into something my actual camera would produce. Pretty neat.

branding backwards / 04

I chose a very modern brand for this week’s branding backwards series. Dustin K. Friesen is a graphic designer with killer personal branding. I was beyond inspired by his business cards! I mean, how cool are they (photographed above)?? It reminds me to get out of my own box from time to time. You can see the rest of his work right here.

Cassie is on my blog today with her latest Branding Backwards post! Make sure to stop by and check it out.

Tanga Tanga on it's way

I’ve been patiently waiting for the release of the free font download called Tanga Tanga created by Velckro Artwork. I’ve seen the type specimen images floating around the internet for some time now and have always been intrigued. I know this font wouldn’t be ideal for main body copy, but should could be used as a great logo font.

I’m not sure when the font will be released, but until then you should check out the entire Velckro Artwork portfolio.

Snapshots from Spain

One of my absolute favorite was to become inspired is to sit down and browse through a gazillion Flickr photostreams. I came across the photostream by Ixone and really enjoyed the captured moments. Most, if not all were captured on film. I was unable to dig up more information about the artist but you can view many more photos here.

Do you guys have any favorite Flickr photostreams?

Recent Work: Moodboard For a Fine Artist Photographer

Hi guys. A little update on what I’ve been up to lately. I’ve been working with a talented fine art photographer, helping her transform her online space, one little piece at a time until we get all the details figured out. I wanted to share with you a mood board I’ve put together to help guide me along the design process. I know there were a few directions I wanted to explore, but wanted each direction to pull some fine art cues without feeling too much like the stereotypical photographer’s identity. We’ll see what happens, but I’m excited to get more into the design portion over the next week.

Lesson Learned: It's OK to take a blog break

This is one lesson that I am still learning, everyday. A lesson that after almost 5 full years of blogging (1.5 here at The Veda House and several others while in college) I am just now starting to be ok with the idea of letting loose. I used to be a person that would check my blog stats daily and freak out when the numbers weren’t where I was expecting them to be. I was mentally and physically ALWAYS connected to the blogging interface. These days, I hardly EVER check my stats, and let me tell you something…it’s a game changer. You blog because you love it, and it’s as simple as that.

So now that I don’t freak out when numbers yo-yo around it’s time to be okay with disconnected from the digital space all together. As time goes on, it has become easier to just step away, and I look forward to it getting even easier. The fear of losing all my readers overnight is no longer there, thank golly, but it sure is hard to get mentally back in the game after being away for any extended amount of time. This means that I do fear that I’ll lose my groove, my daily rhythm and I fear that when I return from mini breaks I will return with zero motivation. Sometimes breaks are good to clear the mind, but I’ve had situations where I clear my mind so much that I’m empty of ideas. Ever happen to you?

Do you guys take blog breaks? Do you feel like you can or is there a constant fear that taking a break means you are a sucky blogger? I’d love to hear your thoughts because it’s definitely something I’m still learning.

* I’m considering this a “Freelance Journey” post because blogging is such a big asset of my blogging life. Not sure why I felt the need to justify that….oh well!
