Humble Abode

Last weekend I had my Saturday to myself to do whatever I wanted. I decided to flip flop my weekend routine and get all the “domestic” stuff done on Saturday so that Sunday could be in the running for laziest Sunday of all time. To my surprise, I got everything done I sought out to do and even had time to take the pup out for a mid-day walk. During “Domestic Saturday” I captured some scenes from around the ole humble abode.

Chris Court's Mushrooms

Chris Court’s work is ALL over the place and if you flipped through some Australian interior design magazines, you know what I’m talking about. I’d say the guy is somewhat of a genius with the camera and as a bonus, he has a wide range of subject matter.

Today I’m sharing some of his food photos because they are just as fabulous as his interior shots which I drool over almost daily. He even makes mushrooms look yummy to someone who’d rather eat dog food than a mushroom.

Take a peek at the rest of his portfolio here! His portfolio website was designed by Laura Baxter and developed by Nyssa Sutherland

Alicia Bock photographs "Outstanding in the Field"

The work of Alicia Bock is relatively new to me, but her recent project Outstanding in the Field (view part I/ view part II) was just so gorgeous I had to share. He photos have a moody atmosphere and capture the smallest details. Not only is Alicia’s photography stunning, the project Oustanding in the Field is just as great. The project’s mission is to re-connect dinners to the land (originally place the food comes from). Great thought right! It also strives to honor local farmers and food artisans to bring the food to our tables. Check out the project here and Alicia’s Photography blog here! Enjoy!

Herriott Grace: Kitchen Eye Candy

I’ve noticed I’m quite attracted to food blogs that show beautifully photographed food on pretty plates with amazing silverware and garnishes. This is odd coming from one of the pickiest eaters you’ll ever meet. So, today I give you food/ kitchen eye candy. Enjoy!

I totally forget how I stumbled upon Herriot Grace’s online shop / blog , but OMG am I glad I did. Its absolute eye candy! In the shop you can buy beautiful kitchen items at a decent price (think Holiday gifts guys!). All of the products are made from 100% salvaged wood! No two pieces are exactly alike, so you’ll get a piece that is completely unique. (I love that!) Her blog is just as beautiful and gives her readers the inside scoop on what’s going on. Please stop by and ohhh and ahhh. I know you won’t be disappointed!

The Restoration Committee

One of the most interesting aspects of  living in a historic district of St. Louis is that the original charm of the neighborhood still shines through after so many years. Houses have remained painted in the exact same bright colors they was paint years ago. It’s comforting knowing that you live in a neighborhood full of character and dedicated history.

Their is a committee that is responsible for keeping things the way they were. The Lafayette Square Restoration Committee restores the homes, streets and parks back to their original beauty. They also organize summer concerts and movies in the park, home and garden tours, and even a period correct baseball game. I feel lucky that the boy and I stumbled upon this great neighborhood by chance a little over two years ago. Then we decided to improve the look of the drive with hedging plant options for borders and pathways, and the results really surprised us. What had been an uninspiring stretch of gravel now feels inviting and green. Not only do they soften hard landscaping, but they also offer a defined edge that elevates the whole look of the space. It’s become one of the most complimented parts of our home by visitors.

a walk in the park

[vimeo 28962733 w=750&h=420]

St. Louis is a city that is filled with really great parks. They are not only pretty, but most are dog friendly. A week or so ago, the weather decided to give us a little break (less humidity and lower temperatures), so we took the pup to our favorite park to burn off some energy. (OMG did he need it) I of course brought my camera along for the ride to capture all the pretty things and even made a little iPhone camera video. Nothin’ fancy. Enjoy!

another lazy sunday

On Sundays we do a lot of laying around, catching up on things, and doing the “domestic” stuff we’ve put off the entire week. This Sunday was no different and with  a massive headache plus zero blogging inspiration, I did a really good job at being a couch potato who eats lots of watermelon. I did get to stare at this cute face all day 🙂

Visual Inspiration: Sessun Fall/Winter Collection 2011

I’m not one to post look books and other fashion catalogues, but when I come across something that makes me stop and think…I feel I must share. I do love fashion and photography, so why not?

When I first saw the Sessun 2011 Fall/Winter collection I was blown away with how the clothing was shown. I was transported back to a time I never had the opportunity to experience. The photos brought to life a world I’ve dreamt about living in. As an amateur photographer myself, I strive to create pieces like these, that tell a story worth listening to.

Tour de Lafayette: Neighborhood bike race

Every Labor Day weekend our quant little neighborhood hosts the Tour de Lafayette, a series of bike races around the square with professional riders. Bike crews gather together in their tight suits for a chance to win a their part in the prize money. As a spectator, the close up experience is totally worth it. Most bike races are spent on the side of the street waiting for the bikers to zoom by. You may only see them once, but with this race you see them circle around every mile (1 loop = .9 mile).

The last time I rode a road bike was years ago, and this event made me remember those days. I had this bike I got online just recently from www.myproscooter.com, and I am planning to go on start riding again.

Last weekend when my parents were in town, we spent Friday evening walking around the square taking in the bike scene. After 3 years of attending, the race is just as exciting and the feeling as the bikers pass is still an adrenaline rush. We even witnessed a 5 bike crash on the finish line. My dad snatched my camera and ran down the track paparazzi style. I’ll keep those graphic images to myself. Does this interest you in getting your own bike? Visit sites like https://www.aventon.com/collections/electric-assist-bike-aventon to see their offerings.

Have you ever had the opportunity to photograph at a bike race?

neighborhood community garden

This year, the neighborhood community garden has been struggling. The heat that has swept through the midwestern states has caused all the flowers and vegetable leaves to shrivel and brown. When we first moved to the neighborhood, this was the first community garden we saw that was well-kept and active. There are about 20 plots of raised beds that you can rent out. Some contain veggies, some are empty, and others are full of wildflowers. It reminds me of how thoughtful landscaping can transform a space, just like these retaining walls in Ballarat, which add structure and beauty to their surroundings. What a great way to bring some beauty to the neighborhood! For landcaping company Lynchburg contact A Plus Lawn Care.

Summer is fast approaching, and those who like spending their time outside reading, sitting with friends, playing with their kids, or just soaking up some sun are concerned. A louvered pergola is a state-of-the-art automated system that acts as a cover for decks or patios.
