DIY: simple homemade body scrub

I’m a really big fan of taking the time each evening to take a bath and pamper yourself. This body scrub is 100% natural, relatively cheap to make and takes no time at all.

What You’ll Need
1. An old jar with lid
2. Enough RAW sugar to fill the jar almost to the top.
3. Natural Coconut Oil
4. Lavender Essential Oil

How to Make it!
1. Make sure the jar you’ll be using is nice and clean and that the lid secures tightly
2. Fill the jar with raw sugar until it almost reaches the top
3. Pour coconut oil over the sugar slowly until you see it has completely coated the sugar
4. Stir the sugar and coconut oil together until they are well mixed. It should NOT be runny
5. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the mixture. The more drops, the more potent the smell.
6. Stir and that’s it!

Suggestions:
– I bought all my supplies from my local nearest indian grocery store.
– You may also use white pure cane sugar for a similar effect. The raw brown sugar I used has a rougher texture, which I like
– Instead of coconut oil, you can use extra virgin olive oil or peanut oil
– For an extra personalized touch, make a tag or gift the scrub with some twine 🙂

Hoyt Arboretum: The first trail

On our second night in Portland (when we were finally starting to feel settled in) we took an evening drive around the Northwest Quadrant of the city. Just outside of immediate downtown, we left the hustle and bustle and were suddenly surrounded by the Pacific Northwest iconic greenery. Since this was our first time in the west, we were both in awe and kept saying “Look how green it is”.

On our way back into downtown, we stopped at the Hoyt Arboretum to walk some of the shorter trails. It was one of those “pull over to the side of the road” kind of unexpected adventures (the best in my opinion). This non-profit green space was an 187 acre ridge-top area with paved hiking travels of a variety of walking lengths. We discovered that slugs must be the state’s most popular animal. They were EVERYWHERE!

One thing I really loved about Portland was the GOOD food and the variety of restaurant atmospheres. Each place had it’s own iconic look/feel and had their own well-known dishes. I never ordered anything that I just hated. Even the little, seemingly nobody hole-in-the-wall kind of places were the places with the best food and vibe.

Some of the most notable places. Ironically almost all the below places were on the street of our hotel. Very convenient 😉

1. Clyde Commons (yummo, amazing french fries & really enjoyable dinner vibe)
2. Kenny & Zuck’s Delicatessen (double yummo, amazing Ceasar Salad and great lunch place)
3. Living Room Theaters (best hot chocolate and late night chats with the bartender 😉
4. Bunk Sandwiches (got the pulled pork sandwich and a mexican coke)

the collected & reused (chicago paper company)

Collected during a weekend hunt, this piece is oozing history and it just happens to be one of my favorite items in the shop right now. It’s definitely going to be one of those pieces that are hard to let go of. It shows visible signs of use with dings, scratches and some paint pealing, all to be expected with a classic vintage piece that was used on a daily basis. The drawer is in great working condition and I could see if converted into a bunch of things. Quite large and somewhat heavy, this piece would make a stable addition to any working office or perfect in a craft show display. The possibilities are endless when it comes to reusing this piece.

I can’t help but envision Michael Scott from The Office when I hear the words paper company. I know you’re getting a visual now… 😉 Stop by the shop when you have a second and see if there is something in there that can help you with organizing your own or displaying your goods at a summer craft fair!

taking a chill pill…yogurt style

It’s been about a year since this little yogurt stop (Chill) has been in town and every time I visit I have a hard time straying from what I order the very first. I’ve fallen in love with the cake batter yogurt with Oreo crumble on top. Simple but 100% perfection. Who ever invented self serve yogurt shops is a hero in my books.

The interior styling of this place is extremely well done and feels like you are walking into an uber modern art gallery. The walls and decor are stark white with pops of teal blue. The toppings bar stands out with all it’s brightly colored goodies. They even have Nerds and hand made sea salt carmel to add to your order. yum-o

Located in Wisconsin, The Hamilton Wood Type Museum is like heaven to any one who adores wood type or printmaking. The museum take up over 40,000 square feet and has over 1.5 million pieces of printed history. With a membership you can rent out a studio. You’ll have over 1,000 styles and sizes at your disposal and it is said that Hamilton’s collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world.

Mr. Fitzgerald's Polaroids

Sometime during this last year I stumbled upon the work of Photographer, Parker Fitzgerald. He’s a pretty darn creative soul and I believe he’s in the process of mastering Polaroid photography. (not to mention all other forms of photography 😉 He’s currently living in Portland Oregon and capturing the life that bustles around it.

Parker has willingly compiled a collection of Polaroids he feels best portrays Portland and provided a mini description for each. Since I’m here visiting this beautiful city, I thought this would be a perfect was to bring it to life.

absolute favorite portraits ever.

Much as with Laura Taylor, getting the opportunity to shoot photos of her was a fulfillment of an artistic circle. I love this portrait. It captures how I see Lindsay’s spirit perfectly.

[Taken with a Polaroid 195 and 669 film] Laura Taylor is one of the first photographers I ever really followed, and I’ve known her since she was a wee girl of 16. It was a great honor to be able to take her portrait. It felt as thought important things had come full circle. This was hurriedly shot in a random neighborhood on our way to the airport. I almost missed my plane back to Portland from LA, but it all turned out alright. I wouldn’t have minded though. It definitely was worth it.

[Taken with a Polaroid 195 and 108 film.] I recently moved into a new house with my brother and have begun teaching both him and another friend a little about photography. This nice latice wall is in my front yard. It’s been in more than one recent photo haha.
[Taken with a Polaroid 180 and 108 film] My brother is probably my favorite male subject that I’ve ever shot. Since moving to Portland from Florida a few months ago, he has frequently been in front of my camera. This is one of my absolute favorites of him.

[Taken with a Polaroid 195 and 669 film] Last year, Christina was a frequent subject of mine. She is great on either side of a camera and it’s always rewarding every time we go out for pictures. This was taken in Colorado on a freezing, foggy day just before Christmas last year. Behind my parent’s barn, down near a creek, there is a shallow valley full of redstem dogwood plants. I spent the afternoon making her freeze to death. This photo came as a result. ^_^

I might just get a chance to meet the fella while on vacation if timing works out!

American Modern: Thomas O'brien

I’ve recently added American Modern by Thomas O’brien to my coffee table book collection. The book itself is a real beauty with a gray cover and minimal pattern. The content within is just as incredible and just as well thought out. Thomas O’brien, a designer and collector has put together a cohesive collection of interior styles that infuse a hint of ‘modern’.

I really appreciate flipping through the different sections of the book ( Traditional Modern, Urban Modern, Vintage Modern, and Casual Modern) seeing how little touches of modern can be infused into any style you have in your home. I also really enjoyed getting a little backstory behind each home/project featured in the book. You can tell by the way he speaks about his work that he is extremely passionate about what he does and values the connection he makes with the homeowners.

I would suggest this book for your coffee table and there is much more than pretty pictures to look at. BUY THIS BOOK–>

Hey guys. I hope you are having a great week and have some exciting plans lined up for this weekend. The boy and I are having another lazy day in Portland OR, because it decided to rain on our parade. I think we’re alright with that through. 😉

Today we are going to check out the local IKEA. We don’t have one close to our city, so I think it’s going to be quite an adventure. I’m just bummed that I can’t really buy anything unless I want to ship it home. ick!

So far we are really enjoying our trip. Feeling the time coming to an end, but still have a bunch of things planned. Hope the sun shows it’s face again before we leave.
