Jeremy Mason: Wax & Oil

Hey there friendly friends! I’ve been feeling a little slacking in the fine art department here on the blog so today’s post is all about that. I was recently introduced to the work of Jeremy Mason (Financial Planner by day, artist by night) and was instantly intrigued. The pieces are abstract (which I love) and are constructed with some unique materials; oil, wax, & wood. Did I mention the awesome use of color? After talking a little with Jeremy through email, this is what he had to say about his work.

I love modern art with an antique sensibility.  I am inspired by art and design that is as comfortable as it is challenging.  As such, I attempt to use the most traditional materials I can in my work.

My latest series was made using encaustic wax, a medium that dates back to the Egyptian times and was revived by modern artist Jasper Johns.  For the base of each painting I brushed wood panels with a rust mixture historically used for staining gun stocks.  The wax is used to seal the wood grain and can be clear for building layers or pigmented to add color.  ”  –Jeremy

Never Love A Wild Thing: Downloadable Wallpapers

Something fun for today. I was in need of a new wallpaper for my iPad, so I figured I’d create my own. The quote featured in the wallpaper is from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I really love it. I read into it literally and figuratively, so lots of ways of looking at it. Full quote below & original image.

“Never love a wild thing…. He was always lugging home wild things. A hawk with a hurt wing. One time it was a full-grown bobcat with a broken leg. But you can’t give your heart to a wild thing: the more you do, the stronger they get. Until they’re strong enough to run into the woods. Or fly into a tree. Then a taller tree. Then the sky. That’s how you’ll end up…. If you let yourself love a wild thing. You’ll end up looking at the sky.”

Sonnenzimmer

Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi have merged their talents as fine artists, print makers, and graphic designers to create Sonnenzimmer. They specialize in making a wide variety of hand-crafted posters, prints, books and packaging. They have a 7- year history together that seems to have built an amazing ongoing collaboration. I find a lot of inspiration from their work and feel like aspects of the pieces translate to what I hope to achieve in my graphic design work. What do you think about Sonnerzimmer?

Recent Work: Identity for Always Something Paper Shop

Over the past few months I’ve been working with Maria McBride on creating a brand identity for her new online paper goods shop and blog. We’ve started from scratch, exploring the ins and outs of what she wants her brand to stand for. The project scope includes a whole brand identity, custom online paper shop and personal blog. We’re continuing to work our way through the process, but until I have more to share I’d like to give you a sneak peek at the logo we’ve come up with. I’m pretty happy with it and I’d like to think we’re on our way to creating a really fun online shop/blog. Stay tuned for more in the upcoming weeks!

Nell & Mary : Made in Portland

Aside from the really icky weather most of the year, I think I’d really enjoy living in Portland and being surrounded by all the fabulous artist and creative culture. Just recently, Nell & Mary had a Fab.com Sale, selling their environmentally friendly hand-printed textiles. The Morels Tea Towel is stealing my heart each and every time I look at it.

Stop by their Etsy shop to see more products (tea towels, placemats, napkins, pillow covers)

Movie & TV Prints by Needle Design

Needle Design is a little online print shop run by Matthew Needle (Designer + Illustrator. I was immediately drawn towards his black & white prints….go figure.

“I am abstract in my means of communicating ideas, not because it’s ‘trendy,’ but because I want people to really think about and analyze what they are viewing.” – Matthew Needle

Mike Perry + Kick Starter

Just the other week, I was contacted by Mike Perry. He was introducing me to his most recent project (Wondering Around Wandering) and asked if I’d share it with you guys. I jumped on the opportunity, as Mike’s work is among my favorite in the illustration world. WAW will be a 3 month free community exhibition and event space where Mike will be conducting workshops, screenings, gatherings, open discussions, and much. I’m excited about the free workshops including workshops for Zines, Drawing, and Type.

Here’s the “kicker” (hehe). In order to host this event in New York, Mike will have to rent out a pretty large space. You can imagine how much that space will cost right? Not to mention all the art supplies and cost of bringing in talented artists. There are 5 more days to “back” this project by donating to the project cause. You can pledge any dollar amount you choose and if you jump in quick, there is a free gift associated with each pledge amount.

The project will only be funded by Kickstarter if the $30,000 goal is reached. Now’s your chance!

Be Free & Let It Be

I’m learning to live more like a flower child. Learning to live more in the moment. Plan less, do more, see more, be more care free, less critical, more spontaneous…

It’s all part of my larger goal to just be more free. I’m learning to let go and just be.

*Above photograph is by photography student Joe Wilson. I feel the image captures the spontaneity that I’m striving for and shows the beauty in simple things.
